Frankenstein [Jun. 9th, 2012|03:43 pm]
International Bon Vivant and Raconteur

Today Alexa and I caught the National Theatre’s filmed production of Frankenstein at BAM. Though the two main actors switch off from show to show, the one we saw had Johnny Lee Miller as Frankenstein and Benedict Cumberbatch as the creature. It was absolutely incredible, from the acting to the staging to the makeup. Catch it if it comes your way!

On a side note, this was my first experience at BAM’s Rose Cinema, despite living in Brooklyn for 21 years. It’s quite a nice theater, though if I’d designed the place I would have added a center aisle for people to be able to get in and out of their rows without having to disturb everyone as they take the long, long walk to one end or the other. Just common sense, really.

I saw the broadcast with Miller as the Monster and Cumberbatch as Frankenstein Thursday. I was thoroughly impressed. I've been thinking about it since then and have been putting together an eventual post about it. The thing that I think I liked most about it was that they re-focused it on the creature's experience as he describes it in the second volume of the novel. I'm hoping that they end up releasing a DVD because I'd really like to a.) see the role switch, and b.) use it in the classroom one day.

A DVD with both performances would be awesome!

I loved Miller in Trainspotting. I'm sure he's great in this production.
