"As Long As You Don't Scare the Horses and the Children"

Something we forget in our rush to laugh at or about Charlie Sheen is his history of violence against women. In a New York Times op-ed piece, author and Jezebel website creator Anna Holmes does a good job reminding us that Sheen's not all tiger blood and Adonis DNA. He's also a serial abuser.

Forty-three minutes into his “special live edition” with Charlie Sheen on Monday night, Piers Morgan finally got around to asking his guest a real question. Before that, Mr. Morgan and Mr. Sheen had mostly traded chuckles and anecdotes about multiday benders, inflated network salaries and meet-ups in Aspen, Colo. But then, after three commercial breaks, Mr. Morgan inquired, “Have you ever hit a woman?”

Sheen, of course, belongs to our untouchable "royal class"--he's a celebrity, so we think we know his true heart, and he's richer than the rest of us can comprehend, so we think that means he's better than us. But the truth is, anyone else who acted this way, anyone who didn't pull in millions of dollars in advertising revenue for a powerful entertainment corporation while going on violent, drug-fueled rages against women, would have been fired from his job and imprisoned long, long ago.
