My Own Private BEA

I've been incredibly busy recently with a major freelance project, so I haven't been posting much on LJ. Rest assured, though, that I have been reading my friends page -- or perhaps skimming might be a better word, with my eyes constantly on the lookout for key words like "books," "horror," "TV," "movies," and "Nick Kaufmann is so hot," the latter of which I have yet to stumble across -- even if I'm not always leaving comments.

I was too busy to go to BEA this past weekend, which saddened me, since BEA is a wonderful, once-only-every-other-year-in-New York event that in my opinion is not be missed if one can help it. However, to make up for it, Friday night I was lucky enough to have my own private BEA!

That night Alexa and I joined brian_keene, nihilistic_kid, Jesus Gonzalez and Ronald Damien Malfi, all of whom were in town for BEA, at the Chelsea Holiday Inn for dinner and drinks. I was jealous of everyone's overflowing goodie bags of free books and novelty giveaways, like the ManLoveRomance.com lip balm Nick M. showed me, but I managed to beat back the green-eyed monster and have a truly fine time. I get to see Brian and Nick M. very infrequently, and Jesus even less frequently. Ron I only just met for the first time that night, and decided he was a pretty cool guy. It was great seeing everyone and just hanging out, talking shop and shooting the shit. Anytime you can talk about literature in one breath and Godzilla in the next, you know you're in good company.

Del Howison and a friend of his whose name I'm now blanking on were also there for a short time but left before we moved on to the major drinking stage of the evening. Del is a very sweet man who, like the others, I only see on rare occasions. I was also excited because I was promised I'd finally get to meet princessalethea in person, but she never showed up. I remain convinced that she's not real but rather some kind of fabulous Internet bot.

As is always the case, the night ended much too soon, even though we were all tired by ten-thirty. I tell you, the days of staying up 'til dawn drinking with friends are way behind me. Way behind all of us, it seems. But the good news is, everyone liked Alexa and she liked them too. Even better, they didn't scare her away!
