But not anymore. Both will be closing soon: the Times Square location in April (it's turning into a Forever 21 store; with a multilevel, 52,000-square-foot layout, I can only assume it will be the universe's largest Forever 21) and the Union Square location, like all other Virgin Megastores around the U.S., will be closing in June. Roughly 1,000 jobs will be lost.
Now there will be no place in New York City to buy CDs and DVDs under the same roof. No place to meet with friends for a serious bout of browsing the aisles before dinner or a movie. For over a decade now, the Virgin Megastore was, for me, a landmark, a destination, a time-killer, and a one-stop shop for all my holiday gift shopping.
I know I'm turning into the equivalent of a crotchety old man over all these closings, but the places I've mentioned -- Kiev, Love Saves the Day, Religious Sex, etc. -- were all a part of my life, and to see them gone is a cold stab to the heart. Hell, the Plaza Hotel isn't even a hotel anymore!
What's next for the chopping block, the Angelika? Kim's Video? Papaya King? Sad to say, but stay tuned.
Thanks to jewellwelles for the heads up on this bad news.
