"Thank god Hitler never got the lizard."

Last night I attended my first Fantastic Fiction reading at the KGB Bar in I don't know how long -- months! -- but there was no way I was going to miss imago1 on a rare trip to New York City! Laird read a brand new, unfinished story that left us all hanging on the edge of our seats just as it was starting to get really creepy. Curse you, Laird!

james_morrow was the night's second reader, and he read two hilarious pieces, an excerpt from The Philosopher's Apprentice and an excerpt from his Godzilla parody Shambling Towards Hiroshima. It's been at least a decade since I read Morrow's Only Begotten Daughter, and hearing his new stuff reminded me just how much I enjoy his work and need to seek out more of it.

As an added bonus, jplangan came down from the distant tundra of upstate New York to be Laird's bodyguard in the big, bad city.

I'm so happy I got to spend time with John and Laird, as they're two of my favorite people and I don't get to see them very often at all. (They keep telling me I should attend Readercon in Massachusetts in July, and I may just do that this year. As usual, it will depend on time and money.) Sitting with them at the Chinese restaurant after the reading was a delight. I wish we could have gone out for a nightcap, but they had to get back to John's place upstate.

Next month, pgtremblay and Stewart O'Nan swing by from Beantown for the Fantastic Fiction series, and there ain't no way I'm missing that either!
