Summer Heights High

Now that HBO's disappointing six-episode run of Little Britain USA has ended, they're showing the 2007 Australian comedy Summer Heights High in its time slot. (Imagine that, an actual imported show, not a dreary remake -- I'm looking at you, U.S. version of Kath & Kim! And U.S. version of Coupling, and U.S. version of Men Behaving Badly! But not you, U.S. version of Life on Mars. You're my favorite new show this season!)

Anyway, Summer Heights High is a fake documentary series like The Office, but set in a public high school. Creator/writer Chris Lilley plays three of the characters: rich transfer student Ja'ime, troublemaker Jonah Takalua, and theater teacher Mr. G. As comedy goes, it's all right but not great. The first episode, which HBO aired tonight, shows promise, but also room for improvement. I'm interested enough to see how it plays out, so I'll be checking back next week, but there's something about the show that makes me think it could become grating. We'll see.

In other news, for some reason HBO is still airing The Life & Times of Tim. Hasn't someone been fired for that yet?
