The IT Crowd

On leethomas' recommendation, I started watching the 2006 Britcom The IT Crowd, which premiered on IFC last night. It's a cute show that stars Chris O'Dowd and the brilliant Richard Ayoade from Garth Marenghi's Darkplace as two nerdy, socially unskilled IT guys working in the basement of a major corporation. Enter Katherine Parkinson as their new supervisor. It's bad enough she's a woman -- they're intimidated by women and have no idea how to talk to them even in a professional capacity -- but she also doesn't know a thing about computers, having been given the position sort of by accident. Wackiness ensues.

I think there's a lot of potential here, even if The IT Crowd is a somewhat traditional workplace sitcom. The usual British comedic style of surrealism and gentle humiliation seems to be working well here, but I think they're going to need to up the surrealism level to keep me happy. As I said, it's got potential, and now that the pilot episode has established all the mundane stuff it needs to, maybe they can tap some more of that potential and really take off.

The TV Nerd says: Worth checking out.
