Gov. David Paterson of New York has told state agencies to recognize same-sex marriages performed in states and countries where they are legal, his spokeswoman said Wednesday.

The governor's legal counsel told state agencies in a May 14 memo to revise policies and regulations to recognize same-sex marriages performed in California and Massachusetts as well as Canada and other countries that allow gays and lesbians to marry, said Erin Duggan, the governor's spokeswoman.

The memo informed state agencies that failing to recognize gay marriages would violate the New York's human rights law, Duggan said.

It's not exactly legalized gay marriage in New York yet, but it's a step in that direction. Once state agencies start recognizing the legality of married gay couples from other states, it's only a matter of time before that is extended to resident citizens as well.

Heard about this on the drive in to work this morning. Go NY!

I wonder if the CA ruling allows people from other states to go there to get married. If I recall, MA specifically does not allow that, you have to be a resident.

Originally you didn't have to be a resident in MA, but then they changed it so that you either did have to be or had to have plans to move there after the wedding. I haven't heard anything about the exclusivity of the CA law, though.

I haven't either. From what I hear, actual marriages will not start happening in CA until sometime in June. So perhaps we'll learn more in the upcoming month.

It's very kind of him to turn a blind eye to that kind of discrimination
