Me: Video store guy. You: Dawson's Creek ingenue. No, the other one.

Sunday night, after a pre-Labor Day barbecue, some friends and I went to see a band called El May at a local hipster bar. I'd never heard of them, but they were friends of my friends, so I thought I'd tag along and give a listen. Turned out they were pretty great. Their songs were mellow and contained real emotion, which is a nice change from a lot of the chucka-chucka-why-did-you-leave-me live music I usually end up hearing at these things.

While there, I noticed a young woman standing in front of me. She was rocking out to the music, banging her head and shuffling her hips, which was odd because the music was so mellow and not really rock-out worthy. We got to talking, and it turns out she knew everything about the lead singer: where she was born, when she left Australia to come to the States, all the previous bands she'd been in. I asked if she was friends with the singer, and she said no, though they'd talked a few times.

It occurred to me then that I was face to face with this band's Mel.

Afterward, I saw my old customer Dawson's Creek at the same bar. She looked great (if a little on the too-skinny side). She'd cut her hair short and dyed it black, and was wearing a slinky black dress and fishnets.

Today a friend told me that she read in People magazine that Dawson's Creek and the Joker had split up. If I'd known that Sunday night, I would have been all "Hey, remember me from the video store?" and then wiggled my eyebrows seductively.

Maybe I should post a Missed Connection to Craigslist.
