A new billboard advert for Sony's white PSP has caused consternation across the US videogaming community. The ad shows a white model dressed entirely in white threateningly grasping the face of a black model. Next to them are the words, "PlayStation Portable. White is coming".
What, are you fucking kidding me? Who greenlit this ad thinking it was a good idea? Obviously, Sony is trying to be controversial for the sake of attention, but I think this goes beyond provocative into an uncomfortable "white power" zone. Who are they marketing the white PSP to with this, anyway? Hitler youth?
My favorite line from the article: So far the debate has split comments sections with some condeming Sony and equal numbers defending the ads as a harmless personfication of the handheld console's two available colours.
Harmless personification? Phew! I was worried all those centuries of white people owning black people as slaves might have created emotional and societal baggage that would require at least a smidgen of sensitivity, but it looks like I was wrong about that. Thank goodness there's no more racism in the world and images like this one have no deep social undercurrent!
