More from Game Change by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin:
"'Fuck you! Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck!!!'
McCain let out the stream of sharp epithets, both middle fingers raised and extended, barking in his wife's face. He was angry; she had interrupted him. Cindy burst into tears, but, really, she should have been used to it by now."
Ouch! McCain's legendary temper comes through quite clearly in the book. He drops more F-bombs than a Mamet play. But what also comes through at times is the old McCain, the one I used to respect for having independent thoughts in his head, before he started carrying water for George W. Bush in 2004 and tried to turn hard-right in the 2008 campaign. To whit:
"[McCain] was disgusted by Republicans in Congress and talk radio gasbags such as Rush Limbaugh who bashed immigrants. 'They're going to destroy the fucking party,' he would say.
As McCain's town hall meetings devolved into shouting matches over immigration, the candidate let his frustration show through. He called Lindsey Graham in despair. Listen to these people, McCain said. Why would I want to be the leader of a party of such assholes?"
This book is crazy! And I haven't even mentioned all the insane shit John Edwards pulled, or Bill Clinton's alleged new extramarital affair in 2006, or Obama's constant, subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) dissing of Hillary Clinton right to her face, or Hillary's cynical, desperate attempt to convince superdelegates that America wasn't ready for a black president yet, or...
Seriously, it's one behind-the-scenes revelation after another, and as soul-crushing as it is at times (I used to like Elizabeth Edwards until I learned she was a paranoid, condescending and abusive loon who constantly belittled everyone around her, including her husband and his staff) I can't look away!
