It looks like HBO is trying to extend its original programming brand from Sunday nights to Friday nights as well. Last night they premiered their new series The Ricky Gervais Show, and in my opinion it was sheer boredom.
I like Ricky Gervais a lot. The Office and Extras were both excellent shows, and his brand of awkward humor is one I enjoy. But The Ricky Gervais Show is actually nothing more than an animated version of Gervais' popular podcast, and with very flat, Flash-like animation no less. Have I mentioned lately that HBO is looking for the cheapest possible programming?
It's always nice to see (or in this case, hear) Gervais and his comedy partner Stephen Merchant again, but half an hour of listening to them laugh at their "stupid" friend Karl Pilkington while he relates stiffly animated anecdotes left me cold. I think I gave a meager chuckle once, and that was it.
I can't imagine sitting through more episodes of The Ricky Gervais Show no matter how much I like him as a comedian. The TV Nerd says avoid it, and if you like Gervais' podcasts, just stick with that instead.
