Big Love is Back, Baby! [Jan. 11th, 2010|10:55 am]

Yay! Welcome back, Big Love!

I was happy to see in last night's premiere on HBO that they changed the opening credits. I've never been a big fan of the ice skating sequence and quickly grew weary of the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows" as the theme song. Unfortunately, in my opinion the new opening credit sequence is even worse than the old one. Lots of floating, flying, falling. Whatevs. The song wasn't bad, though.

But the rest of the premiere was aces. I've always thought the most compelling aspect of Big Love was all the Juniper Creek intrigue. The other things, like the new casino, Margene's QVC show, the little family dramas, pale in comparison, at least for me. But the more the Juniper Creek stuff bleeds into the characters' everyday lives, as it has been doing more and more, the better the whole show becomes.

My one prescription: More Alby and his power-mad wife! (And it looks like that's going to be happening this season anyway.)

So, so happy this show is back!

"Chuck Me!" [Jan. 11th, 2010|03:05 pm]

Yay, Chuck is back too! I've been a big fan of this spy comedy since it debuted a couple of years ago. The writing is always top notch, and last night's two-hour, out-of-timeslot third season premiere was no exception: witty banter, slapstick humor, and cool action set pieces abounded. Chuck shows no signs of slowing down with age. (The third episode airs tonight in its regular Monday night timeslot.)

I have to admit I get frustrated at times by the "Chuck and Sarah love each other but can't be together because they're spies" plotline, but only because A) I've seen it a thousand times before, and B) I kind of want them to be together. I know, I'm a big softie. There goes my fierce reputation.

Anyway, I've totally missed this show and am so happy it got renewed after being on the bubble last year. Aside from Castle, Mondays have been a virtual TV wasteland as far as I'm concerned, but now, with two of my favorite comedy-thrillers airing on the same night, Mondays are suddenly a lot more fun.

The Trivia King is Displaced [Jan. 11th, 2010|11:23 pm]

I was the only member of Team Totally Tits who could make it to bar trivia tonight, so I wound up joining my friends' team, the Dolphin Punchers, who were short a player. Together we formed the superteam Dolphin Tits (which as a combo name really is miles better than the alternative, the Tit Punchers).

One of the rounds was Movie Sequels, and it just so happened the Dolphin Tits had not one, not two but three past and present video store managers on board! As you might imagine, we did very well in that round. Though, surprisingly, I was the only team member who knew the names of all four Planet of the Apes sequels. (I was also surprised to hear there was a Crocodile Dundee 3. I don't know how that one slipped past me. Or rather, I do.)

Still, we flubbed a number of other rounds, especially the ultra brutal audio round, The British Are Coming, where every song was tantalizingly familiar but none of us could correctly identify the titles and/or performers on many of them, and ultimately we only scored 12th place. Grumble.

Team Totally Tits needs to regain its ground, so hopefully we'll all show up next time, on February 8, and show 'em how it's done!
