Paul Newman passed away at the age of 83.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Newman in 1990, when he gave the commencement address at Sarah Lawrence College. His wife, Joanne Woodward, was graduating that year from a continuing education course, if I recall, and so Mr. Newman agreed to give the commencement. I remember he made a funny joke about riding on his wife's coattails, and there was Newman's Own lemonade available at the reception afterward. Both he and Ms. Woodward seemed very nice.
My first exposure to Paul Newman was 1973's The Sting. I remember seeing it in a movie theater, which means I was four years old. No wonder I didn't understand anything that was happening! But to this day, I still put my finger beside my nose as a secret code to my co-conspirators.
Rest in peace, Paul Newman. We'll miss you.
