Every Year

Every year I say this. Every year for the past seven years I have asked these questions. It never changes. The questions are never answered. The wounds are never healed. Every year we are in exactly the same impotent, useless position as the year before.

Every year I ask where Osama bin Laden is. Seven years have passed since the attacks of 9/11, and the mastermind behind the largest mass murder in U.S. history is walking free. Why is this maniac still alive? We had him and indeed most of al Qaeda on the ropes at Tora Bora in Afghanistan. Then we took our eyes off the ball, decided it was far more important to topple Iraq's government instead, and as a result Osama bin Laden remains a free man today. Get that. The man behind the plan to kill more Americans than anyone else ever has. Free. The U.S. has spent hundreds of billions of dollars on the War on Terror, and the failure to capture or kill Osama bin Laden is the biggest indication of that war's failure.

Every year I ask why they haven't started rebuilding at Ground Zero. There's nothing there. Not even a memorial. The Pentagon's memorial was unveiled this year. The spot where the Twin Towers stood? Still a big fucking hole. You've got to be kidding me. Mayor Bloomberg wants to abolish the Lower Manhattan Development Corp., the state agency charged with the rebuilding project, and give New York City itself more control. At this point, I'm tempted to say fuck yeah, kick those a-holes to the curb and let's fucking get started rebuilding already. Let me repeat something I said last year: Had the plan been simply to rebuild the World Trade Center's towers, they would be finished by now. Finished. The skyline would have returned to the way it was on September 10, 2001. The world would have seen how indomitable New York is, how indomitable the United States is. Our wounds would have healed. Instead we went insane and drafted elaborate plans for "Freedom Towers." The red tape flew. It was bureaucratic nightmare after bureaucratic nightmare. It was greed and graft and the crushed dreams of survivors and the families of the dead. For seven years. It's still a fucking hole in the ground, people.

Every year I ask these questions. Every year I am answered by jingoism and political talking points. I'm told that in a post-9/11 world, everything is different. You could have fooled me. All I see is business as usual from our inept leaders and corrupt agencies.

See you next year.
