International Bon Vivant and Raconteur
I remember going out to dinner Saturday night during Necon with a bunch of people, including Wrath James White. The restaurant was some crazy, family-style Italian joint, only they forgot to mention everything was family-style, so we all ordered our own dishes and wound up with sixty-five tons of pasta.
At that dinner, I recall Wrath lamenting the fact that there hadn't been a horror writers convention in his hometown of Las Vegas. It seemed the perfect location for a convention: friendly to tourism, relatively inexpensive, plenty to do and see. I agreed with him, especially since I'd never been to Las Vegas and was looking for any opportunity to go. I forget who exactly suggested it -- Wrath or someone else at the table -- but the idea of him putting together a convention himself came up, and we all got really excited about it. I suggested the name Wrath of Con, but unfortunately that name was already taken.
And so instead it became the somewhat generically named KillerCon, but more importantly, it became a reality. September 17-20, 2009, at the Palace Station Hotel/Casino. Currently, the Guests of Honor include authors Heather Graham, L.A. Banks, Joe Lansdale and Brian Keene.
I don't know yet if I'll be able to afford to go, but I'm hoping I can swing it. I'm also hoping I might be able to spend an extra day or two in Vegas, since you don't really get to see much of the host city during a convention, but I know I'll be tempted to gamble and that's not smart for someone on a tight budget. But still...it's Vegas! Penn & Teller! Siegfried & Roy! Maybe I'll even get to see the elusive blue_underarms!
