International Bon Vivant and Raconteur
In last week's episode, we discovered my cholesterol count was 220 and also I didn't have enough of HDL, the "good" cholesterol. My doctor recommended a statin, and several friends suggested asking him about niacin and fish oil instead, rather than going on a heavy-duty prescription drug.|
I spoke to my doctor today, and the good news is he's fine with me trying niacin or fish oil first. He also mentioned something called red yeast rice that has worked wonders for some of his patients (one guy's count dropped from 250 to 200 on it), but according to my brief internet research it looks like red yeast rice supplements may no longer be on the over-the-counter market with the natural lovastatin that helps in cholesterol matters. I'll hit my local health food stores and see what's what.
He's also not sure the niacin and fish oil will do anything to help with the cholesterol, though it does help with triglycerides, but he figures it's worth a shot if I can't get the red yeast rice.
Also, my chest x-rays came back fine. Whew!
