International Bon Vivant and Raconteur
Back from the Mermaid Parade at Coney Island and, really, too drunk to be writing a blog entry. But it's nigh impossible to spend 12 hours at Coney Island and not come back drunk, so I beg your indulgence.
Can you believe I've lived in New York City for the majority of my life and have never gone to the Mermaid Parade before? But this year my friend Amanda was one of the judges, so I had to go. It was so much fun! My friend Sabrina and I got to check out all the bikinis and talk about girls (it's wonderful having lesbian friends). Amanda herself was rocking the bikini look from the luxury of the shaded judge's booth, while the rest of us baked in the sun. (One thing Coney Island really, really needs is awnings.)
My favorite group was the Marine Antoinettes, who were all dressed like Marie Antoinette. They started off doing one of those historical-type dances you see in prestige films -- groups of four, joined at the hand and turning in a circle -- then started breakdancing to "Rock Me, Amadeus." It was genius, and they won a well deserved trophy.
Sadly, I forgot to bring my camera, so I don't have any pictures of all the amazing outfits and floats. Nor any pictures of the numerous wardrobe malfunctions at the exclusive after-party Amanda got us into. But there was fun dancing to be had, and burlesque and go-go girls. A fine way to spend a Saturday.
I do hope there will be a Mermaid Parade again next year. So much of Coney Island's future seems up in the air right now.
