The Machine Girl [Jun. 7th, 2008|12:23 am]
International Bon Vivant and Raconteur

I just watched The Machine Girl tonight, and I loved it. If you like crazy, tongue in cheek, over the top action movies from Japan, I think you'll dig this one. It's about a Japanese schoolgirl, in full school uniform, who has a machine gun for an arm and fights yakuza and ninjas. It's the kind of movie where someone gets hurt and blood sprays out of the wound like it would from a garden hose. It also pays sneaky homage to quite a few Asian actioners from the past, including John Woo movies, Takashi Miike's yakuza films, and Shaw Brothers kung fu fests. Even the flying guillotine makes an appearance!

Frankly, The Machine Girl is everything Grindhouse should have been.

Taking Stock [Jun. 7th, 2008|10:46 am]
International Bon Vivant and Raconteur

It's been a while since I've taken stock of the ol' writing career here, so if you're interested in that aspect of my life, here's the what-what:

Recently Completed Projects
+ Jack Haringa Must Die! - fundraising anthology, out now
+ "Mysteries of the Cure" - short story, coming soon in an anthology I'm still not allowed to talk about
+ In the Shadow of the Axe - novella/short novel, on submission
+ "The Beat of Her Wings" - short story, on submission
+ Chasing the Dragon - novella, on submission

Current Project
+ Revisions on "The View from the Maelstrom" - short story

On Deck
+ Noble Rot - novel (bonus points if you know what noble rot is)
+ 3 short stories for anthologies I've been invited to submit to
+ 1 possible novel ghostwriting gig

Whew! So how come I still feel like I'm not doing enough? Oh, right...Jewish parents.

Great speech! Gracious, supportive, powerful, uplifting. Well done.

I don't know how things will shake out, but she proved herself today to be great Vice Presidential material.
