International Bon Vivant and Raconteur
I haven't walked out of a movie before the end in more than a decade -- and trust me, I've seen some shitty movies. But this weekend, kelliwithani82 and I walked out of Michel Gondry's Be Kind Rewind. What a disappointment, especially considering the strengths of the director and the cast (Jack Black, Mos Def, Danny Glover, Mia Farrow coming out of freaking retirement), but the movie was just so boring. There wasn't a single bit of dialogue or a single scene with any resonance whatsoever. Nothing major seemed at stake at all, several scenes had the clunky feel of on-the-spot improvisation with no second takes, and the movie remake parodies (inexplicably called "Sweding" in the film) were nowhere near as funny as they should be. We left with only about 10 or 15 minutes remaining, but we knew there was no way the end would be any better than the rest. I'm guessing the old video store gets saved and isn't demolished to make room for more generic Yuppie housing.
I have the perverse desire to "Swede" this movie myself!
