I think we all suspected the day would come when forensic evidence exonerated Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jesse Misskelley, known collectively as the West Memphis Three. There simply wasn't any evidence that the then-teenagers killed three 8-year-old Cub Scouts. And now that day has come, or is at least close at hand, 14 years after they were railroaded to a conviction by prosecutors who linked their love of heavy metal music to Satanism.|
The strangest thing about this development, though, is that John Mark Byers, father of one of the victims and considered by some supporters of the West Memphis Three to be a more viable suspect, is leading the charge to get Echols, Baldwin and Misskelley released. Byers was never considered a suspect by the police, but now suspicion has fallen on another parent of one of the murdered children: Terry Hobbs.
This story just gets weirder and weirder. I tell you this, though. Echols, Baldwin and Misskelley are going to have one hell of a lawsuit in their hands when they get out of jail!
