Awww yeah! I am so loving Reaper! It's like a Y-chromosome Buffy, but instead of Giles as the mentor figure, it's the Devil (played by Laura Palmer's father!). Oddly, there are some superficial similarities between Reaper and Chuck: both feature socially awkward man-children as the main character, both characters work in strip-mall super-mega-stores, both have an even more socially retarded best friend who has no sense of tact and doesn't shave (played here by the tactless, non-shaving, conspiracy-theorist brother from last year's Invasion), and both shows have great senses of humor. I haven't seen a pilot episode so smooth and well developed since, well, Buffy. And Kevin Smith, whom I've always found to be a much better writer than director, actually did a fine job directing it. Reaper may wind up being my favorite new show of the season.

Just Another In a Long Line of Celebrity Customers

Ever since Dawson's Creek and the Joker stopped coming to the video store, I've been wondering who would take their place. After all, we need a certain balance of celebrity customers to keep our neighborhood rep. Not-Keyser-Soze hasn't been in in years. Match Point and her husband Face/Off and even Next Stop Wonderland haven't come by in quite a while.

Then, who should walk in tonight to open a brand new account but Fried Green Tomatoes! She looked great, too. She and her boyfriend (husband?) just moved to the area. I've always had an Inappropriate Celebrity Crush on her, ever since she was in Some Kind of Wonderful, but it was her role in Fried Green Tomatoes that sealed the deal. I had to stop myself from gushing all over her and play it cool instead.

The customers in the store, however, exerted less self control. One woman paid her a very polite compliment while her two adorable pugs sniffed at Fried Green Tomatoes' ankles!
