Kontroll [Sep. 7th, 2007|12:09 am]
International Bon Vivant and Raconteur

I hate to be one of those people who uses his blog to say "Hey, I saw a great movie!" but...

Hey, I saw a great movie! It's a 2003 film from Budapest called Kontroll, and it's an absolute joy from start to finish. Very European in that it's more episodic than linear and features random bits of techno-dance music every once in a while. It takes place entirely in Budapest's subway system, following a handful of misfit ticket takers. There's even a bit of a mystery involving a hooded psycho going around pushing people in front of oncoming trains.

Every once in a while, a movie comes along that I wish I had made. I had that feeling the first time I saw Harold and Maude, for instance, and I felt that way again watching Kontroll. It's a weird feeling to have, because it sounds kind of conceited when you say it out loud, but I think it just means that I hope to one day have something under my belt that I would feel that proud to have made.

Unfortunately, Kontroll's director went on to make the crappy "Oh my God, we're a bickering couple and we're gonna get killed in this motel room by snuff filmmakers" thriller Vacancy. Ugh.
