The Writing Life

Since many of the people who read my LJ are writers, many of you know that the writing life has its ups and downs. Sometimes both on the same day. Like today.

The up: I finished the rough draft of a new novella. I love this one, and my crit group loves it too, which is always good. However, I think the ending I wrote is poop. I'll need to rework it tomorrow night instead of veging out in front of Doctor Who. Or maybe after veging out in front of Doctor Who.

The down: I received an email rejection today, a form letter with a nice personal note attached (I'm friendly with the editor). Even knowing rejection is a huge part of this business, it always stings a little to get one. I'm not entirely surprised, though. I was never quite sure if this particular story is very good. It's gotten a couple of rejections so far. Not enough to make me trunk it yet, and you never know if it's going to tickle some editor's fancy somewhere, but this sure has been a hard one to sell so far.

Onward and upward, as they say.
