Bridge Collapse

The bridge collapse in Minneapolis is scary news. At least 7 are dead, and scores more are injured.

yoppulent emailed right away to let me know he and his family are okay. (He emailed so fast, in fact, that I hadn't even heard the news yet when I got it!) Turns out they use that bridge all the time, just not today.

I emailed my ex-girlfriend Lena DeTar in St. Paul, probably the first time I've contacted her in a year, asking her to sound off and let me know she's all right. Turns out she uses that bridge all the time too, but she was at work when it collapsed. She's fine.

Big sigh of relief. It's amazing how it always comes down to timing, isn't it? I'm reminded of the stories of people who worked in the World Trade Center but overslept, or stopped to buy a coffee, or got caught in traffic, and narrowly missed the attacks that morning. It's all in the timing. Unfortunately, timing is one of those things we can't control. Sometimes we're just plain lucky to avoid catastrophe. Other times, as many people in Minneapolis discovered today, we're not.

I guess that's as good a reminder as any to try to live your life to the fullest. You never know when the timing might be off.
