International Bon Vivant and Raconteur
Yay! Heroes wrapped up its extraordinary first season with a wonderful finale last night. This show has come such a long way in such a short time. I remember watching the first few episodes and thinking it had an interesting premise but was kind of boring. It takes most shows a while to find their voices, but Heroes did it quick, before the season was even half over, and became a must-see series. Hell, people were asking if we carry it at the video store while it was still airing!
Heroes always had good writing, but the finale was filled to the brim with lines and moments to love: Molly's mention of a super-powered boogeyman even worse than Sylar (hello, season two plot!); Claire's line "I already have a family"; Sylar's line "Turns out you're the villain, Peter. I'm the hero"; Nathan's line to Peter "You saved the cheerleader so we could save the world."
Unfortunately, there were a few things that smacked of being plot devices, too: Why would Sylar allow Hiro to stab him? He had several seconds to ward off the attack as Hiro ran toward him, and we've seen him be even faster than that. Also, Peter adopts other people's superpowers. He can already fly after being around Nathan. So why would Nathan have to personally fly him anywhere? Did the writers forget?
I can be nitpicky about anything, though. The finale was wonderful, even if the final battle should have lasted longer -- there I go nitpicking again -- and I can't wait for season two!
For those interested, the Heroes: Season One DVD set comes out August 28.
