Believe it or not, my 20-year high school reunion was actually a lot of fun! yoppulent and I were huge grumps on the subway ride to the Upper West Side, vowing we would only stay long enough to grab a free beer and then take off if it sucked, but color us suprised - we had a great time! Everyone was really nice and it was great to reconnect with many of them. Plus, a lot of my classmates have less hair than me!
The school has like 85 new buildings since I went there - it's the NYU of Upper West Side high schools - but I was far more interested in walking around the original building and looking at my old classrooms. They were much smaller than I remember. How was I able to sit in the back and think I was far enough away from the teacher to talk and pass notes? The old swimming pool and gym were roughly the size of the desk you're sitting at now while you read this journal entry, and yet doing laps in the pool seemed endless, and somehow we used to put on plays in the tiny gym! What were we, leprechaun-sized?
My legs are killing me today because yoppulent and I did a hell of a lot of walking, too. Friday we walked all over the Village and looked at all the Rite Aids that our favorite hangouts have turned into. (We also ran into my ex-wife, who is now blonde.) Saturday, after the reunion, we walked all over Central Park and the Upper West Side. Yesterday we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge and went to the South Street Seaport. I'm pooped! We also stopped everywhere over the course of those three days for cappuccinos and pastries. I mean everywhere! It was an eating tour of New York! I'm all Cappuccinoed out. I think it'll be a long time before I can have another one.
And for those of you playing at home, the Giant Zit of Doom is still on my forehead.
