Esteemed author Charles L. Grant passed away today. I didn't know Charlie, I'm not even sure I've read all that much by him. But two years ago he went into the hospital with a serious illness, and we all rallied to help.|
I'm proud and honored, along with leethomas, nihilistic_kid, the HWA and dozens of giants in the fields of horror, science fiction and fantasy who went above and beyond in their donations, to have put on one hell of a silent auction fundraiser at the 2004 Stokers. It was a lot of work, much of it beyond stressful, but it was well worth the effort. At the Stoker Award banquet, we announced a total of over $10,000 raised to take the financial pressure of Charlie and his wife Kathy.
He'd given so much to so many, as a writer and a mentor, that this was our way of giving something back: Let us take care of the bills, you and Kathy just take care of each other.
No one thought he'd ever come home from the hospital. It took two years, but he finally did. A couple of days after, he passed away.
I've read a lot of testimonials today about his life and his work. I hope I and everyone involved were able to help make things easier for him in some small way.
