...So I'll Just Say So Long Instead

Last night was leethomas and his partner John's farewell to New York party. Next weekend they're U-Hauling down to Austin, Texas, where a wonderful new life of barbecue and no middle of the night car alarms awaits them.

The party was fun but tinged with sadness. Every break in the conversation brought a moment of melancholy reflection, not to mention anxiety about a future without them being just a subway ride away. Lee and John have been such a big part of my life for the past five years that, despite it being only a few turns of the calendar, it feels like the end of an era.

I'll miss our many trips to the Union Square Virgin Megastore for coffee and DVD browsing on those afternoons we were supposed to be writing, and to the Barnes & Noble across the park from Virgin for that game only writers play where we point at books by all the people we know (and drink more coffee). I'll miss Movie Night in Lee and John's shoebox-sized Upper West Side apartment, where the liquor and snarky commentary flowed freely. The Who Wants Cake writing group won't be the same without Lee's colorful critiques ("Chapter Four:"), nor the HWA-NYC Chapter drinkathons every month without his crude double entendres and frequent tirades about the confusing life of heterosexuals

They'll still be just a phone call/email/IM away, and I'll get to see them again in November when I go to Austin for World Fantasy, but it won't be the same. I can't call up Lee anymore and say, "I'm bored, let's get coffee," and that makes me sad. I fully understand why they would want to move somewhere cheaper and with a more relaxed pace than New York City, but I wish they were sticking around all the same.
