I Went To There [Feb. 2nd, 2013|12:58 pm]

I wrote a comment in response to Genevieve Valentine’s amazing blog entry about the end of 30 Rock that so perfectly summed up my feelings about it that I felt the need to repost it here:

I think 30 Rock will go down in history as one of the greatest TV comedies of all time. Certainly it will remain one of my favorites.

Oddly enough, I didn’t like it at first. I thought in the season of dueling behind-the-scenes comedy show series Studio 60 would come out on top. In my defense, that first episode of 30 Rock wasn’t great. They had some growing to do. But they grew fast, and by the end of the first season I was hooked and Studio 60 was canceled. For once, TV got it right.

I’ll miss 30 Rock something awful. The pain of its loss is tempered only slightly by knowing that another surreal and often sneakily intelligent comedy, Community, is returning in 30 Rock‘s timeslot. But a world without Liz, Jack, Jenna, Kenneth, Pete, and all the others feels somehow less bright. I suppose the best thing I can say about 30 Rock is that I haven’t felt this sad about a show’s departure since Arrested Development. (And, I suppose, Arrested Development 2.0: Better Off Ted.)

P.S. I’m only sorry we never got to hear Liz’s theories on how Mad Men ends.

I have only ever seen the "Leap Day William" episode. I was crying with laughter, so at some point I'll have to check the rest of the show out.

"This card expires tomorrow! You did that commercial for nothing!"

"Okay, bring us a bottle of your most expensive wine!"

"That will be TWELVE dollars."

And the Ewok under glass. And the evil genius map table without an auto-activating door. And. And. Yeah.

As much as I loved 30 ROCK (and it was brilliantly funny), I only ever watched it after THE OFFICE. I haven't watched either of them for the past couple of seasons. If only we possessed the technology to acquire full seasons of television programs instead of having to check the TV listings in the daily newspaper for reruns...

Perhaps one day in the future, my friend. Perhaps one day in the future.
