Dear News Programs

Dear News Programs,

I understand that for your Michael Jackson retrospectives you want to show a clip from his most famous video, "Thriller." However, the sight of a recently deceased celebrity dancing with rotting corpses is a tad awkward. You may wish to rethink this.

Sincerely yours,
Nick

That's why you'll never work in television, Kaufmann!

I wondered how long that'd take to happen.
Keep it classy, American media.

It was like ten seconds after he died.

Also, there's that point in the video where he turns into corpse himself.

I learned recently that news organizations will create print and video obituaries in advance with celebrities that they think might die, so that they won't be left in a lurch when it does occur, as morbid as that sounds. Apparently when Britney Spears was at her worst a few years ago, various news organizations made some for her. I'm guessing they were caught off guard with Michael Jackson. Yeah, he did have some health problems over the years, but did anybody really think he might die this soon?

I think they did with Jackson too because right now, as we speak, there's a special airing on ABC called "The Life & Death of Michael Jackson."

Actually, yes, a while back I thought all the turmoil and stress surrounding the upcoming tour might be the end of him - or if he managed to get through rehearsals, then actually touring itself would kill him. I didn't think he had the physical and mental strength to be able to perform the way he did even just five years ago, let alone ten or twenty. But I'm not saying I "knew" he'd die, just that I didn't think he'd ever actually be able to perform.

Such is, after all, the way of all flesh.

Maybe it's just the former 13-year-old in me that remembers him at his zenith when he was so healthy and vibrant. To think of him dying of a heart attack just seems so surreal. It seems like only yesterday that he was a healthy man in his twenties. How you perceive time can be a funny thing.

There's an episode of the excellent Australian TV mockumentary/sitcom 'Frontline' which has fun with this; it shows the editor spending a slow news day updating the obits of former celebrities who haven't died yet.

Oh, since the media is beatifying and immortalizing him, I think the reference to life in death is quite appropriate.

The networks can get back to important world events like N Korea and Iran anytime now, thanks.

I believe it's possible to separate the artist from the art, and Jackson was quite the entertainer.
