Necon 25 [Jul. 18th, 2005|10:41 am]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Share Next Entry
Necon 25 Highlights:

+ Riding to and from the convention with [info]leethomas, [info]suricattus and the ever-patient and wonderful Stefan Petrucha

+ Introducing everyone to friend and fellow Who Wants Cake writer Dan Braum and everyone thinking he was Dan Brown, author of The Da Vinci Code

+ The incredibly hot woman who asked me to sign a copy of my book for her

+ Tom Monteleone hugging me and telling me never to stop writing

+ "Weekend without Fear"

+ Being the only one on the self-promotion panel who didn't display my work and still selling out of all the copies of Walk in Shadows I brought with me (and [info]douglas_clegg was the best moderator I've ever worked with -- not only did he do his homework on each of the panelists, he managed to keep Darrell Schweitzer in line)

+ Having my work successfully pitched to agent Lori Perkins by a third party without my knowledge

+ Placing fourth in the infamous Game Show and being informed by Craig Shaw Gardner and Doug Winter that there would now be no escape from being a contestant in the future

+ Knocking Tom Monteleone out of the Game Show and not waking up dead the next morning

+ Seeing [info]lokust again and finally meeting his partner

+ Running into someone I slept with many years ago and not having it be awkward

+ Breaking my self-imposed book-buying moratorium to pick up a copy of [info]johndharvey's novel The Cleansing because [info]lokust said it was good and he has good taste

+ Holly Newstein inscribing my copy of her novel with "To Nick - One of the cutest guys at Necon!"

+ Two words: Jack Haringa

Necon 25 Lowlights:

+ The Vagina Tree is no longer there

+ Dan Braum's roommate, also known as That Guy with the Plastic Shark

+ My searing soar throat

+ Returning to four days' worth of unread LJ entries -- I skimmed them all this morning, so instead of replying with comments let me just say that's hilarious/I'm so sorry/he's an asshole/dude, don't let her play you like that/you really should get a new job/I don't read the novels, I'm waiting for the movie/how could you make out with someone with such a stupid name?/I still think Johnny Depp looks creepy in the trailer

+ [info]spimby didn't come

+ no surprise visit from [info]pgtremblay like last year

Hey. Tina and I had some small part in that, too....

Out of everyone, I think Tina is the one who got the most words out, while Richard Dansky and I were on the other end of the spectrum, sitting there muttering a few incoherent lines around our coffee cups.

true!
all in all, it was marvelous to see his madness stopped, if only for a short while.

Knocking Tom Monteleone out of the Game Show and not waking up dead the next morning

"Tom I have two words for you. It begins with Borderlands and ends with 6."

Probably the single best line the entire weekend.

i'm glad to see you sold so many books and let me know what you think of john's book!

Dan Braum's roommate, also known as That Guy with the Plastic Shark

All kinds of Zeppelin-esque images are running through my head now.

Welcome back-and congrats on selling out!

Thanks, Laurie. Dan's roommate was carrying a little plastic shark around with him. We don't know what that was about, but we named the shark Nibbles.

Ha! I think that's pretty charming, actually.

Did you drink? Did you get sick?

Oh yes, there was drinking. I didn't get sick, but I felt pretty burnt by Saturday.

May the Many Arms of Vishnu Strangle You...

Well, I was drunk. And he promised me a garden (perhaps even a rose one), but like all men and the great blood-thirsty goddess Kali, HE LIED TO ME!
